Yes! Sunday Roast Day is our favourite foodie day of the whole week and we love to celebrate it with friends and family.
In true WLGT style, we have created your Essential Guide to the Best Roasts in Town – so grab a cuppa, sit back and enjoy your very own curated guide to make your Sunday in Chester even better with the very best food and drink for miles around!
Artezzan Restaurant & Bar, Chester
They may be brand-spanking new, but Artezzan is already delivering a first-class dining experience with a Mediterranean vibe – and the food, drink and service is outstanding! The team here are totally committed to ensuring every guest has a truly memorable visit, and the family-share Sunday Roast platter is seriously epic! (I know, we had the very first one!). The beef melts in the mouth, the gravy is full of flavour, the roasties are fabulously fluffy and the cauliflower cheese has the perfect amount of truffle loveliness – and as for those Yorkies, just book in to find out! We teamed it up with an excellent bottle of Chianti (chosen by Manager Cosimo) plus the Chocolate mousse, the Lotus biscoff and mascarpone calzone (there are no words …) and Affogato to finish followed by a couple of cheeky Espresso martinis. It was all heavenly!
(pre order for minimum two people).
The Chester Fields, Great Barrow
Such a great quality venue championing local produce – with the most magnificent views over the Cheshire plains. With a beautiful beer garden and brand-new outside Oak & Smoke Pizza Kitchen, this venue really does have it all. This is most definitely a firm favourite, independent dining pub with a stunning outside space (with lots of cover to protect from the Great British Weather!) and great food using the best ingredients sourced from their doorstep.
Barlounge is still one of the city’s favourite venues. Always great quality with a wonderful welcome from a team who really care about your Good Times in Chester. They serve a fabulous roast on a Sunday with a killer glass of red – as well as the rest of their fabulous menu (sticky sausages are still on!), cocktails and the usual Barlounge love!
The Suburbs, Hoole
They may have been closed for dining in, but The Suburbs continued to serve their fabulous Sunday roast right through lockdown – and now you can dine-in and enjoy it in everyone’s favourite, local neighbourhood bar and restaurant. And if you’re not quite ready for that – you can still order it on takeaway. Groovy!
The Brewery Tap, Chester
The Brewery Tap is one of Chester’s best independent dining pubs, owned and operated by award-winning local brewery Spitting Feathers on Common Farm in Waverton. Boss Matthew Whalley is passionate about the environment – and has been actively operating sustainably for many years, long before it was a headline. The fabulous pork served on their Sunday roast comes from the farm – and we can confirm, it tastes amazing!
The Pied Bull, Chester
One of the oldest Inns in the city and with some fabulous surprises (like a Microbrewery, stunning bedrooms and a beautiful secret garden), The Pied Bull also serve one of the best Sunday Roasts in Chester in their gorgeous hidden garden right in the middle of the city. We love it!
Chef Carl Noller may run a stunning menu of Italian themed dishes throughout the week, but it’s all British on a Sunday with his fabulous Sunday roast using the best local produce. Don’t miss it!
The Boathouse, Chester
This venue really does have it all – great beer from JW Lees Brewery, a fabulous outside space with super-cute beach huts and a floating barge – 17 beautiful Riverside bedrooms and the most stunning location right on the River Dee itself. And one of the best Sunday Roasts in town. Enjoy!
Ring O Bells, Christleton
Another of our favourite Great Cheshire Pubs, Ring O’Bells Christleton is thoroughly deserving of its place as one of Chester’s best dining pubs with a fabulous Sunday Roast always cooked to perfection by Andrew King and his award-winning team. They have created a magical outside space with that awesome dining tipi, and they get super-busy – so be quick to book!
This wonderful and totally unique venue from expert brewery and pub group JW Lees is much more a refined restaurant and bar than a traditional hostelry. A gorgeous refurb in January 2020 was swiftly covered back up with the arrival of the pandemic. We may have had a few glimpses between lockdowns, but now it’s time to reacquaint yourselves with this stunning city centre venue with one of the very best Sunday roasts in town! And lets not forget the location on the prettiest street in the city too, right next to our glorious cathedral.
The Goshawk, Delamere
Just 15 minutes drive outside of the city and one of our very favourite dining pubs, Neil and the team have created one of the best Great Cheshire Pubs – with a fabulous outside space overlooking a perfectly manicured bowling green (how very Cheshire!), The Goshawk is great quality and is so worth a little foodie journey out-of-town.
The Forge Restaurant, Chester
The Forge is a brand new restaurant created by ‘the game chef’ Mike Robinson. Head Chef Curtis Tonge definitely needs a very special mention, as him and his crew were awarded a Michelin recommendation after just 3 weeks of being open! There really is something for everyone at The Forge, and if you’re a Sunday Roast fan like me, then the entire meat offering is your perfect roast-of-the-day, served every day of the week. Stunning.
The Black Dog, Waverton
We are super-impressed with this fabulous venue which keeps on getting better and better as owners Matt and Bec find new ways to WOW us week in, week out, and their Sunday Roast is excellent too. Served inside and out in their brand new Amazonian style terrace, this is Independent Chester Dining at its very best!
The Ship Inn, Handbridge
If you love a bit of traditional hospitality perfectly accompanied by great beer and great, locally produced food – then this is the place for you. The Good Ship Handbridge is setting sail again on the river front just over the Old Dee Bridge – and personally I can’t wait to jump on board for a fabulous Sunday roast, and that fabulous view over The River Dee and Edgar’s Field. See you there Shipmates!
The Secret Garden at The Townhouse
Since The Secret Garden reopened, I have heard so many amazing reports of a great welcome, a magical space, lovely food, superb cocktails and so much more – and I agree as I was lucky enough to be invited to their preview evening right at the beginning. And now it just got even better with the menu addition of their Sunday Roast. Be quick to book – this heavenly oasis fills up pretty damn quickly!
Rowton Poplars Hotel, Waverton
This is such special and unique venue – a lovely bright hotel with a great quality restaurant and bar serving a fabulous Sunday roast, plus they have one of the best beer gardens for miles with Dining huts and Wigwams, perfectly located on a great stretch of the Shropshire Union Canal.
Opera Grill, Chester
Sundays are seriously fun days at Opera Grill. A fabulous Sunday lunch menu is teamed with amazing wines and cocktails plus super-groovy beats. Always a great experience inside or out – their new pimped-up terrace is definitely the place to be seen on our favourite day of the week.
