Let’s face it, we ALL love a good burger. Be it keeping it plain and simple with a hamburger; or going all out with a triple-burger-cheese-and-everything-else combo – you just can’t beat them!
Living in Cheshire we are spoilt for choice when it comes to the burger offerings, so we’ve carefully selected (and sampled) the best in the business – and compiled them into our great big burger bash guide!
Napkins at the ready, it’s about to get seriously juicy….
Burger Shed 41, Bridge Street
Of course, we had to kick off this sumptuous guide with the much-loved Burger Shed 41, based on Bridge Street in the city centre, who are infamous for their delicious burgers and fantastic sides & drinks to complement.
Their menu features something for everyone, including epic vegan and fish burgers for those non-meat lovers too. Our personal favourite would be the ‘Hot Burger’ – featuring a beef patty topped with lettuce, tomato, American cheese, nduja and fresh chillies – it’ll knock your socks off!
They’ve also got 2-4-1 on all of their burgers every Wednesday, so what are you waiting for?!

Barlounge, Watergate Street
Barlounge, situated at the bottom of Watergate Street in the City Centre, is renowned for it’s fantastic vibes day and night!
Their food menu is second to none, featuring some incredible burgers that simply cannot be missed. The ‘Barlounge Burger’ is made up of a well-marbled beef patty with Cheddar, watercress & red onion jam, all served in a sesame seed brioche bun with skin-on fries on the side. It really is a treat.
They’ve also got their gorgeous vegan ‘Garden Burger’ – made up of a soya patty, vegan smoked Gouda, pickled cucumber & red onion jam, served in a vegan bun. Fabulous!
The Black Dog, Waverton
Well known for their super-creative menus, outdoor domes for dining and their stunning new Champagne terrace, the Black Dog have firmly imprinted themselves on the Cheshire food and drink map!
If you fancy a little trip out of the city centre, we’d strongly recommend popping in and tasting their delicious burger, available as either a beef, steak or chicken option and served on a brioche bun with lettuce, an onion nest, sauce, slaw and some delicious home-cooked fries – it really is WOW!
Duttons, Godstall Lane
If you happen to be wandering the cobbled streets of Chester anytime soon, on the hunt for a spot to visit for lunch… this is your place!
Duttons is a beautifully presented and welcoming bar and restaurant located down Godstall Lane smack-bang in the city centre. They are certainly a contender for the best burger award with their juicy and delicious ‘Duttons Burger’. This bad boy features two beef patties with pulled pork, Monterey Jack cheese, BBQ sauce, dry cured bacon & dill pickle.
Hickory’s Smokehouse, Chester River Front
If you’re yet to visit Hickory’s Smokehouse at Chester’s gorgeous River Dee front, we strongly recommend you book in for a visit very soon.
Offering up an all-American menu with flavours of the deep south, and home smoked meats that will have your mouth watering – you really can’t beat it!
They’ve a whole selection of incredible burger options for you to feast upon, including the ‘Bird & Beast Burger’. Why choose between beef & chicken when you can have both, right? Made up of Southern fried chicken, a prime beef patty, a golden hash brown, crisp lettuce, fresh tomato, American style cheese & tangy creole mayo, all served within a toasted bun.
The Old Dukes, Belltower Walk
The Old Dukes is the perfect place to visit for families and sports lovers, Chester’s very first one-of-a-kind multi-floored sports bar. They’ve got incredible grub on offer, a fantastic selection of drinks and lots of entertainment! From pool tables, to darts there’s a lot going on – and guaranteed fun from the minute you arrive.
They’ve a ridiculously tasty selection of burgers for you to choose from, a personal favourite of ours is the ‘Mushroom and Truffle’ burger! Featuring 2 x mushroom patties, caramelized onion, cheese, truffle mayonnaise, fries and homemade slaw!
The Ship Inn, Handbridge
The Ship Inn is the perfect place to visit on a little stroll just over the old dee bridge into Handbridge, beautifully set next to the River Dee, this bar and restaurant is a hidden gem that simply must be discovered.
They’ve a gorgeous offering of burgers included within their fantastic food menu, with a chicken, beef and veggie option for you to choose from!
WLGT recommends the ‘Cajun Chicken Burger’ – A delicious Cajun spiced chicken breast topped with bacon, cheese, rocket and sriracha mayonnaise!
They even offer 2-4-1 on their gourmet burgers every Thursday, result!
The Goshawk, Mouldsworth
The Goshawk in Mouldsworth is well known for their delicious selection of dishes and drinks, and when paired with the stunning interior and countryside setting – you’re really on to a winner.
They’ve some seriously juicy burgers for you to try, including a wonderful ‘Piri Piri Chicken Burger’ on a toasted sourdough bun with tomato, baby gem lettuce, lemon & herb mayonnaise, skinny fries & coleslaw!
So why not take a short drive out of the city centre and discover this fantastic pub and restaurant, situated not too far from Delamere forest (perfect for an after or pre-walk meal!)!
Ring O’ Bells, Christleton
A firm favourite of Cheshire diners and drinkers alike, the Ring O’ Bells is a must-visit bar and restaurant located in Christleton, just outside of Chester City Centre.
They’ve a magnificent offering when it comes to food and drinks, and their burgers are tip top. WLGT recommends their ‘Classic Cheeseburger’! Featuring a beef patty, American cheese, gherkin, onion, lettuce, burger sauce and fries, served on a brioche bun.
They even offer 2-4-1 on these delicious burgers every Friday, so get yourself booked in and enjoy!
The Deva Tap, Brook Street
The Deva Tap on Brook Street in the City Centre, offer some mouth wateringly good burgers that are perfect when washed down with their delicious selection of beers, IPA’s and wines.
Their ‘Smash Burger’ is particularly popular with diners, and we can see why! Three beef patties, cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato and bacon all put together perfectly with a super soft brioche bun. It really is as good as it sounds!
The Suburbs, Hoole
The venue that really helped to put the Hoole drinking and dining scene firmly on the Cheshire map, The Suburbs, offer up a mean food menu with incredible cocktails to match!
Kingdom and his team have put together their gorgeous food menu, with dishes inspired by the South African roots of himself and his family. They offer three delicious burgers, the ‘Suburbs’ burger, the ‘McThenga’ burger and the ‘Sowetan Chicken Burger’ – quite frankly we find it incredibly hard to choose which one we like best – so we’d recommend them all!
Opera Grill, City Centre
Opera Grill is one of Chesters more extravagant venues, offering up high end food and drinks with gorgeous luxury interior and outdoor spaces to match!
Offering fine steaks and the best cuts of beef, this is a venue you simply cannot miss from your must-visit list. They also offer some gorgeous burgers, cooked over charcoal or barbecued should the weather permit for that extra smoky flavour. Their ‘Bar & Grill’ burger is absolutely fantastic, and can feature a delicious Aberdeen Angus patty or this can be swapped out for Halloumi should you wish for a vegetarian option instead!
The Pied Bull, City Centre
The Pied Bull, located in the City Centre, is absolutely stacked with history – dating back to 1155 – it is thought to be the oldest licensed house in Chester. A beautiful traditional pub, with gorgeous rooms for guests wanting to stay and a fantastic food and drinks menu on offer too.
Their bar & restaurant offers a juicy selection of Pied Bull Burgers for you to enjoy, and we’d strongly recommend trying their ‘Crispy Buttermilk Chicken’ burger, complete with a brioche bun, sweet chilli sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion jam, coleslaw, onion rings and fries! Wowzers!
The Chester Fields Country Bar & Restaurant, Bridge Trafford
The picture really speaks for itself when it comes to the 10/10 burgers served at the stunning Chester Fields Country Bar & Restaurant in Bridge Trafford. Every dish that leaves their kitchen is carefully prepared with gorgeous fresh ingredients ensuring all that step foot into this country-side venue leaves a very happy customer!
Their signature burger, the ‘Chester Fields Grande Burger’ is a staple on their menu, featuring a delicious beef patty, stacked with bacon, cheddar, coleslaw, beef tomato, gem lettuce and gherkin on a brioche bun served with fries. Yummy!
The Boathouse, Chester
The Boathouse, located on Chesters gorgeous River Dee, is a beautiful spot for food and drinks and even features a floating beer garden! You can sit and enjoy their delicious home cooked food whilst soaking up these stunning surroundings.
They’ve got three delicious burgers on their menu, including an outstanding Vegan option – their ‘Aromatic Garden’ Burger – topped with dill pickle, sliced tomato and vegan cheese melt on toasted sourdough with skinny fries! Wow!
The Hollies Farm Shop, Little Budworth
If you’re looking to venture out of the City Centre, why not pay a visit to The Hollies Farm Shop in Tarporley. A stunning Farm Shop, Butchery, Delicatessen and Gift Barn with gorgeous forest lodges for people wishing to indulge in some five star glamping!
They offer a fantastic selection of foods for takeaway, or that can be enjoyed in their outdoor seating area whilst you soak up the blissful surroundings!
Their ‘Smash Burgers’ are absolutely DELICIOUS, melting in the mouth providing all the naughtiness that you could hope for from a burger and more. Please note these amazing burgers aren’t available all the time – so check back with their socials to find out when the burger pop-ups will be popping back up at The Hollies!

Picnic, City Centre
Mediterranean style independent restaurant and bar Picnic, located in the heart of Chester’s bustling City Centre, have some spectacular dishes and drinks on offer. A favourite of ours their fantastic ‘Lamb Burger’ (pictured) with feta, harissa ketchup, bruschetta tomatoes, focaccia bun and fennel remoulade. It is absolutely fab!
Rowton Poplars, Waverton
‘The Pops Dirty Burger’ – prime beef patty, toasted brioche, bacon, cheese, fried onions, burger sauce, tomato salsa, skin-on fries, salad & “pops slaw”.
