WLGT Weekly Wine Tasting with White Fox Wines and The Yard Chester

This week’s Wine Tasting with White Fox Wines has quite a lovely story attached to it. You now know a little bit about our favourite wine couple Bianca and Juliusz. They run their family wine business here in Chester with huge passion and pride, and they are lovely people too.

I absolutely love putting these wine and food pairing features together every week – it really makes me think about cooking properly at home using some of our fabulous local producers, making seasonal dishes that are big on flavour and low on supermarket convenience. I always bring my great Chef friend Carl Noller from The Yard restaurant into it too as he is always up for a wine and food chat, and he is a local chef who always champions local suppliers.

This week Bianca has chosen something which has even more of a personal story to her family. They chose this wine to celebrate their daughters wedding in Barcelona a couple of years ago, and it brings back very special memories of a fabulous day for them all. About this wine, Bianca says the high point was realising how well it matched the amazing selection of tapas, and how it was perfectly followed by a gin and tonic!

A Spanish red from Rioja Alta, the Viña Olagosa Rioja Crianza.

The producer is Bodegas Perica, and it’s one of the producers from Spain who Bianca and Juliusz have had dealings with for the longest time. It has aromatic intensity and complexity, with red and black fruit notes as well as light vanilla and balsamic. It is refreshing with a mellow, smooth and charming finish.

Food Match: An ideal wine to be drunk unaccompanied, while it goes perfectly well with cold meats, pasta based dishes, mixed vegetables and cheese.  It’s a winner!

So when Carl and I talked about this wine he made a few suggestions from The Yard’s Autumn menu as we knew we could match it with a slightly lighter starter rather than a heavier pasta dish, and one of my favourite dishes is his handmade black pudding with crispy egg. I have seen the Chefs make it so many times and Carl and I have even had a ‘dinner date’ (on camera!) about why he can never take it off the menu. Watch it here;

We’ve tried this pairing and it really works – a treat!

And as Bianca has suggested – this wine also complements cold meats and cheese, and The Yard serves the very best in town. So everyones happy!
